The Other Bennet Sister tells the story from Mary’s point of view, the often ignored middle child, and it continues after Pride and Prejudice. Watching this period series was such a treat, especially the love story of Mary and Tom.
But honestly, it’s not just a cutesy story about romance and courtship. It goes much deeper and made me think about how much of our society still carries childhood trauma and shame. The way parents shape how a child sees themselves can stay with them for life. It can make someone grow up not really knowing what they are capable of or whether they even deserve love. I don’t want you to look at Mary as just a fictional character—she feels like a personification of so many adults who have grown up with internalized guilt and shame from parents or close family.
You can see this clearly in Mary. Even when people around her appreciate her, she doesn’t believe it. She thinks it’s a mistake or a misunderstanding, and instead repeats the same negative things her mother said about her. That part really stayed with me. It also made me wonder—if Mary had never left her home and gone to London, would she have ever realized who she really is? Or would she have just stayed stuck in that same loop of shame and sadness?
Mrs. Gardiner honestly felt like a ray of sunshine. The way she helps Mary slowly see her own worth was so beautiful to watch. Mr. Haywood and Mrs. Ryder, in their own ways, become Mary’s quiet cheerleaders—they show how important it is to have friends and partners who recognize our worth, help us see ourselves more clearly, and gently encourage us to grow into who we truly are. Honorable mention to Mr. Sparrow as well, who in his own subtle way adds to Mary’s journey of feeling seen and understood.
So yes, it’s a beautiful love story, but it’s also about healing, about stepping away for a while to understand yourself better. Sometimes you need that distance to realize you’re not broken or defective—you’re just different, and you are still deserving of love.
Without spoiling anything, I would really ask everyone to watch this show. You can DM me my Instagram for a direct link to watch this series if its not available on any streaming platform in your country.
